Student Finance
If you’re thinking of going into higher education, you can get financial support from the government to help with the ever increasing costs. Finding out what you’re entitled to is half the battle, but the government agency in charge of financing higher education has a mass of information to help you at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.
If you going to study “full time” you can apply for a student loans and grants from the government, and you may be eligible for a bursary from your university or college. The range of bursaries available is different depending on the uni or college you go to, so contact them for more info. The student union may be able to help with your application and further details of hardship funds.
Student Loans are available to help with tuition fees and general living costs, and you can apply for one of each type every year. Tuition fee loans are to cover the total cost of you tuition for the year, and the amount you can get for a Maintenace Loan depends on your household income.
As with all loans your Student Loan will still have be paid back, but it’s deferred until you earn over £15,000 a year. Once you earn over the £15k limit you have to pay 9% of what you earn over £15,000. www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance has full details on payback infomation. Grants and bursaries don’t have to be paid back. Don’t spend all of your loan in the first week, and get a good bank account with a decent overdraft facility. You’ll probably need it!
