British Gas are now offering a fixed priced deal that will run until 2012. How nice for them to offer it just after bumping their prices by a large amount! Still, if you want to fix your energy prices, it may well be a good idea to sign up now.

We’ve seen a couple of other websites that say there aren’t any penalty fees, but if you check the small print, they say that there is a £70 cancellation charge for gas, and £30 for electricity. This is to stop you jumping onto a lower price energy deal if it was introduced in the future.

The fixed price deal may well be a good one if prices continue to rise in winter 2009, but if oil prices continue to drop, energy prices may follow, or at least stablise, leaving you on a higher priced energy plan, and paying over the odds. You are paying a bit more for your energy, but you have an insurance policy against the prices going up. Your best bet is to use a comparison site to see which supplier can offer you the best deal. It may well, be British Gas with their www.britishgas.co.uk/fixedprice2011 offer, but it wouldn’t hurt to spend 5 minutes comparing the market and may well end up saving you hundreds of pounds a year.
