With British Gas pumping up gas prices by 35%, now could be the time to switch to a capped energy deal to protect yourself against further increases from British Gas, EDF, EON, Scottish Power, or any other energy supplier.

All of the energy companies offer capped deals but as time goes on the capped energy suppliers will stop offering the best deals. All the energy companies are expected to follow British Gas over the coming days and increase prices for gas and electricity. If you think that the painful increases will be over for the year, you could be wrong, with more increases expected in early 2009.

The main problem with capped deals is that you’ll pay a bit more for your energy compared to current prices, but have the protection against it going any higher.

British Gas are now offering a capped price deal that runs to 2011 which would make me think that they are fairly confident that prices won’t go too much higher in the next 3 years. With oil prices dropping in the last couple of weeks, their costs looked to have topped off so getting people onto a long term deal seems to be a winner for them. Take into account their T&C at the end of their advert ~ “cancellation charges may be applied” and you could find yourself tied into a deal that isn’t competative if and when oil / gas prices drop. EDF have a capped deal at www.edfenergy.com/protect but it’s only until 2009 and other supplier are capping until 2010 and 2011.

Your best bet is to compare prices from all the capped energy suppliers with The Energy Help Line and see which capped energy deal, or any other offer would be best for you.
